Cards: Lakeside Misses Chance to Tie
The Lake Mills Leader

Everyone knew it
would come down to three weight classes whenLakeside and Columbus met
for wrestling on Thursday night at Lakeside.
Three Warrior seniors and three Cardinals seniors lined up across from each
other from 160 to 189 pounds. Columbus picked up two pins and
a decision in the three matches and used them to propel to a 39-29 win and keep
a strong hold on the top of the conference.
Justin Koller, 160; John Rhodes, 171; and Marc Liechty, 189; all knew they had very tough opponents, but all fell short for Lakeside
"I knew every single one of those
matches would be tough," said coach Jason Nickels. "I did not expect any pins to
come out on either side. I was
just hoping the points came out on our side."
The night started off well for the
Warriors. The match began at 112 pounds where Columbus'
Kyle Mayr
built up a 5-0 lead before Matt Borck
pulled out due to an injury.
At 119 pounds,
freshman Andrew Elliott earned the Warriors
first points of the night with an 8-7 win. Down 4-6 after the second period, he
scored
four straight points to earn the win.
Sophomore
Ryan Draeger
hung with the favored senior Eric Prosser at
125 pounds. Prosser won the match 7-2, but the Warriors were happy to be
only down 9-3 at that point.
"Early on in the match I was very
happy," said Nickels. "Elliott coming back after not wrestling for so long was a
win that we were not counting on until he said,
"Coach, I'm ready to go!"
Then Lakeside took over the match.
Eric Schilling was in control the whole time and won 20-5 then
Alex Schilling pinned Mike Holder in
less than a minute to give the Warriors a 14-9 lead.
The lead increased when John Wilson used a quick move to stick Thomas Wilsey in just 28 seconds.
"Wilson came out like a ball of fire and that really sparked the team," said Nickels.
The tides then turned to Columbus. Dan Powers beat Tim Norstrem 8-2 and Eric Coughlin earned a first period pin at 152 pounds.
The Cardinals
took a 21-20 lead when Mike Metzger beat
Koller 5-1.
Metzger scored three points in the second period and then earned a take
down in the third to win the bout.
At 171 pounds,
Rhodes went up 2-0 quickly for Lakeside, but after an escape and take down by
Cheyenne Larson, Rhodes spent the last minute
of the first period on his back avoiding a pin. Larson finished the job in the
second period to increase the Cardinal lead to 27-20.
"Every single
guy on the team wanted a shot," said Nickels. "The nice thing to see was the
attitude of the younger. It's not hurting those guys
because they lost, it's hurting because they wanted to help their team."
The match still
could have gone either way going into the 189 pound bout, but
Liechty was taken down and pinned in the
third period. Mitch Tiedeman
went up 2-0 and 4-2 during the first frame. Liechty earned a reversal at the
1:38 mark of the second period, but a minute later the wrestlers reversed
again giving Tiedeman the lead. In the third period Tiedeman made another
reversal at the 1:02 mark and then worked Liechty until the pin.
"Rhodes and Liechty both just made a mistake and their guys reacted quicker," said Nickels.
Lakeside still had an outside
chance for the win after Mark Heyn pinned
James McCormick at 215 pounds, but the win
was given to the
Cardinals when Ben Reuter pinned
Travis Zimmerman
at 275 pounds.
Jake
Stewart picked up three final points for the Warriors with a 10-5
decision at 103 pounds to end the
night.
"It's tough to take something like
that," said Nickels. "We will see how they respond over the next coupleweeks. We
will see all these guys again
at conference and regionals."
Lakeside will take a week to regroup and return to the mat Thursday when they host Cambridge for the final conference dual of the season at 7p.m.
