Warriors Win Third Place Trophy
at Deerfield Scramble
Liechty & Heyn Earn Gold Medals
It's an uphill climb to turn a program around, but the Lakeside wrestling team took yet another step
on Saturday by placing third among 15 varsity teams at the Deerfield Invite.
Lakeside finished with 234 points, just 16 behind New Berlin Elsenhower, but 12 ahead of Division 1 Brookfield
Central. Brodhead/Juda won the event with 409 team points. "I thought we did real well as a team," said coach
Jason Nickels. "It was a step in the right direction after the week we had before it." Mark Heyn and Marc Liechty led
the way for the Warriors by winning the 189 pound and 215 pound weight classes respectively. Heyn continued
his undefeated season with four pins. "Heyn did a nice job even though he really only had one tough match,"
said Nickels. "Liechty was in a tough weight class and he wrestled very aggressive, which is what he needs to
do this time of the year."
The tournament used the first two rounds to divide the wrestlers into groups of four; gold,, silver, bronze
and copper. Then the wrestlers competed in a round robin to determine the winner of each group. Besides Heyn
and Liechty, Eric Schilling, Jake Stewart, Tim Norstrem, Justin Koller and John Rhodes all advanced into the
gold group. Schilling took second place at 130 pounds with his only loss to Ken Winters of Brodhead-Juda.
"Eric wrestled very well, just not good enough to win a tough match at the end," said Nickels." Rhodes, Koller
and Stewart all had tough weight classes and didn't back down at all, which is something we have been
stressing."
Norstrem took third place, while Stewart, Koller and Rhodes had to settle for fourth.
Ryan Draeger, Jon Wilson and Mike Hartwig all finished in fourth place in the silver group.
"The tournament was a little costly for us because Ryan Draeger got hurt and is probably out for conference
and probably regionals and Jake Stewart hurt his shoulder too," said Nickels.
Alex Schilling won the bronze title at 135 pounds. Travis Zimmermarm was second in the bronze group, while
Matt Borck finished in third place among the bronze wrestlers.
